Job hunting during Covid-19: 3 really cool tips that could help you land the job.

Job hunting during the Covid-19 pandemic could be a roller coaster ride of expectations and disappointments on its own without the added stress of virtual interviews and strenuous screening processes that leaves you wondering where you went wrong. So if you are job hunting during the pandemic, consider this expert advice from recruiters and hiring managers.

Remote interviews are here to stay at least for as long as the pandemic does:

Get comfortable with the remote interview reality. For the foreseeable future, many job interviews will be online. That means you need to ensure that you look professional and engaging on the video call. You also need to strive to create an emotional connection with the interviewer — not as easy to do on video as in person.

  • Look directly into the webcam (and not at the image of the interviewer on your screen) to make eye contact
  • Dress professionally head to toe in case you need to stand up
  • Pick a clean, uncluttered background and avoid virtual backgrounds like baseball parks (in the case of virtual backgrounds, it gets really creepy when parts of your face disappear when you move it)
  • Nod and smile more often than you think you need to, (it helps to agree with the man/woman who just might your future boss)
  • Using your hands can also help establish a connection and indicate commitment as you only use hand gestures when you are seriously invested in something.

Mind the bots:

A lesser known fact is that most companies use bots for the initial screening of resumes and to short list potential candidates. Stumped? We were too. However, we have just the solution for it.

Understanding how these systems work is just as important as understanding what employers are looking for. The machines that ‘read’ resumes are targeting keywords that are relevant to the job to be filled. For the best chance of moving forward and getting your resume in front of a human, use wording from the job description in your resume — without making it a carbon copy of the job requirements, of course. That means you can’t go with the one size fits all kind of solution. Customize your resume to fit each job you apply to.

Remember, there’s nothing soft about soft skills.

Every hiring manager is emphasizing the essential value of leadership, communication, agility, and the other non-technical competencies. They put more emphasis on them because these are the skills that drive success.

Amid the stress and remote reality of the pandemic, soft skills such as flexibility, listening, and empathy have never been more important. Leaders who don’t like managing change are having a worse year than others. Showing demonstrable soft skills, which you can bring up in the course of discussing challenging projects and/or working relationships, can put you at the top of the candidate list.

Listed below are some skills you should consider demonstrating in your next interview — (think what story can I tell to show these skills?)

  • Communications
  • Empathy
  • Critical thinking/problem solving
  • Social/interpersonal skills

Do your online research to check out a few sample evaluations around the particular skill set. While you’re at it, research typical interview questions for the role. Hope all your research pays off.

Apple’s rumored mixed-reality headset might get an in-person event this year

Apple is purportedly wasting zero time jumping back into in-person gatherings.

According to Bloomberg, the company is planning to announce its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset within “the next several months” at an event that will presumably be open to select media and industry partners.

The news comes only a day after Apple confirmed its Worldwide Developer Conference would be held virtually this summer for the second year in a row. But while the tech giant is clearly content with unveiling its updated operating systems via livestream, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stresses that the same approach won’t fly for its headset.

“Sometime in the next several months, the company is poised to announce a mixed reality headset, its first major new device since 2015. If possible, Apple won’t want to make such a critical announcement at an online event. It wants employees, the media, its partners and developers in the room.” Considering the best (and really only) way to experience mixed-reality is by physically donning a headset, demoing this new Apple device during a livestream just wouldn’t do it justice. So it makes sense that Apple would want to go all in for this one — even with the ongoing pandemic. What can we expect from this headset? Rumors point to dual-curved 8K displays with swappable visors and over a dozen external cameras to track hand movements. It’s also said to include technology that allows for both augmented and virtual reality experiences (hence the “mixed reality” label).

According to MacRumors, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims it’s also going to be portable, meaning users won’t have to contend with messy wires. With its own onboard computing power and storage, the experience would be similar to Facebook’s standalone Oculus Quest 2 — no tethering to a PC or laptop required. But don’t get too excited about acquiring one of Apple’s MX headsets anytime soon. Kuo predicts it won’t be available until 2022. It’s highly possible that Apple’s rumored in-person event might just be held to show off its MX prototype. Still, knowing people from all over the world could be visiting Apple Park to check this thing out

Healthy work-life balance tips to consider during any pandemic.

Between socializing, parenting, running errands, and working, the coronavirus has significantly altered the way we live our lives. For many people, the public health crisis has meant a sudden shift to remote work environments as officials stress the importance of social distancing.

Many of us will continue to work at home, simultaneously juggling multiple roles, for some time to come during the pandemic. Consider these tips to stay healthy and productive:

If you’re asking yourself “What can I do to keep it together? How do I stay sane and keep a healthy work-life balance?,” you’re not alone. Here are some tips to consider and redefine work-life balance during this pandemic:

First things first, get your mind in the game and define to yourself why you need this balance.

We need a work-life balance to feel good, but also to do good. And when we say, “do good,” we mean brainpower, decision-making, creativity, empathy, problem-solving, etc. — all those qualities we need to be a good leader, parent, partner or contributor. So it is important to realize work-life balance is not “nice to have” — it’s critical, it can make or break, people, jobs, companies and relationships.

Define your home office. Remove the “temporary” sign and make your workspace work for you.

We’re not talking Instagram worthy working spaces that could break your wallet, a dedicated area consisting of everything you need to perform your job. It could even be a table at the corner of your living room (most of us probably haven’t entertained guests for what seems like ages). Dedicate this corner table for just work, and try to keep all your other surfaces, especially your bed, work free.

Set boundaries. Establish a clear start and end point to your workday.

Have fixed start and end time to your work day. If it helps dress up as if you were to go to work if you must, but arrange your work schedule to fit a pre-planned time frame. If that meeting with Fred from finance is set to go till late, then why not start late. That will give you time for some catching up with the rest of the family or perhaps a game of fetch with your four-legged friend in your backyard. Here is another advantage of creating a separate workspace: You can leave it. Maybe you can even close the door. Set your office hours and stick to them. Don’t abandon the habit of weekly planning; expand it. And communicate it to everyone, at home and at work.

Don’t forget your entitlement to meal times.

Time box your work commitments and allow yourself to leave your desk or office space at meal times. Having your meals at your desk doesn’t allow for mindful eating, resulting in you eating more than you actually need leaving you feeling all lethargic and drowsy. On the other hand if you don’t eat you are going to feel tired physically and mentally. Neither will help you make strong decisions. There is a reason why psychologists recommend shopping on a full stomach.

And finally, find moments of stillness:

Another advantage of remote work: Nobody will notice if you sit down and close your eyes for a moment. Find a quiet corner and take a moment to just sit and think. Seeing things from a new perspective can generate new ideas. Take a quiet walk before an important meeting. Stillness creates space that helps us make better decisions.

Don’t let the pandemic burn you out. See it for what it is, a god given gift to cultivate new relationships or work on existing ones, try out that new recipe, or learn a new skill online, if nothing else take some time off to dim the lights and dance away to your heart’s content. Take the extra time to work on yourself and challenge yourself with being a better version of you.

The importance of web design to grow your audience

Internet marketing is one of the best ways for companies to attract new customers. A company’s website is often the first exposure a customer has to that firm, so it is important to make sure the site looks its best.

Customers take less than 0.05 seconds to form an opinion about a website. Poor web design can turn customers away, with 94% claiming they mistrust or reject certain websites based on web design.

Especially at these trying times with more and more people opting to make most of their purchases online causing age old brands to close their physical outlets and focus mostly on their online presence.

While it could initially be tough on the wallet to spend on a fully fledged website, when done right it provides an almost levelled playground for large brands and SMEs alike.

The website is also the place where most of the conversions happen so you can not afford any website fails that might cause prospects to bounce off the website.

A website should be designed keeping in mind your audience and should ensure that it provides good user experience. There are a lot of other benefits of a good website design for both your business and your audience.

In this post, we will discuss how a good web design can help bring and keep customers in your website and promote conversions like never before.

It sets the first impression

When your audiences visit your website it gives them an immediate snapshot of your brand and business. They will judge your business within seconds, it is imperative to make a positive impact on your audience.

Web design is important because it impacts how your audience perceives your brand. The impression you make on them can either get them to remain on your page and learn about your business or leave your page and turn to a competitor.

While an impressive first impression will keep visitors browsing an outdated website will immediately have a negative impression of your business and deters them from your page.

It builds trust with your audience

People don’t trust poorly designed websites. If they see poor design or if the information looks outdated, they won’t trust your site. They may view your site as suspicious, especially if they are looking to make a bulk order or spend a fairly large sum of money on a single product. Which is completely rational given the close visual similarities thrift shop knockoffs have to the real brands.

Your website design determines how most people judge the integrity of your business. Trendy and professional website designs tend to promote trust and ensure that visitors feel comfortable checking it out further.

It’s important to build trust with your audience so they remain on your site. When visitors remain on your site longer, you create more opportunities for your business to capture those leads.

Easy Navigation can convince users to spend more money.

Much like the aesthetics of a physical store, websites must be designed and set up to have visitors keen on staying on the site.

When professional designers build website navigation, they want to simplify and reduce the number of options so that visitors can easily decide what action to take or where to go.

A high-quality design makes your site easy to navigate, and multiple tools such as “others also bought” and “similar products” can be used with the right algorithms to gently nudge the potential customer into staying longer and hence spending more money on your website. A good web design helps you keep your leads on your page

It aids your SEO strategy thereby aiding conversions

Many web design elements and practices influence how you publish content on your website, which in turn affects how search engine spiders crawl and index your website.

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is important for the success of any online business. It is a key factor in ensuring more people who are interested in your product or service have access to your website.

This is one thing you cannot afford to mess up. If your on-page SEO fundamentals are not up to the mark, you’ll be fighting an uphill battle for visibility right from the start. To enhance the visibility of your page, you need to make use of SEO-friendly web-design elements and techniques that will optimize your website for search engines and drive organic traffic to your site, thereby, enhancing your online presence.

In conclusion

Website design is an important matter and should not be taken lightly. It can mean the difference between your business’ success and failure. It influences how your audience judges your business or brand. As such, ensuring your website design is aesthetically appealing, user friendly, and mobile-friendly can go a long way in improving the conversion rate, which results in more earnings and successful business.
