Everything you need to know about Artificial Intelligence:  From History to Future

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a word that tech specialists and others in the industry have been throwing around for a while now. back in the day it was used as a solution to all man’s problems in the future and in the case of sci-fi movies the cause for creation of new ones.

That future is here already and slowly but surely AI seems to be taking up everyday tasks in the households and work spaces sometimes, without most consumers even having realized it. This article focuses on everything there is to know about Artificial Intelligence in a nutshell.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is a method of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently like the human mind.

Experts look at artificial intelligence as a factor of production, which has the potential to introduce new sources of growth and change the way work is done across industries. Research has predicted AI to increase economic growth by an average of 1.7 percent across 16 industries by 2035 and increase labor productivity by 40% or more, thereby doubling economic growth in developed nations.

A brief History:

The word Artificial Intelligence was first coined by John McCarthy, an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist, during the first ever AI conference in 1956. It was not until 1969 that the first basic general-purpose mobile robot was built. Shakey the Robot was able to reason about its own actions whereas other robots would have to be instructed on each individual step of completing a larger task, Shakey could analyze commands and break them down into basic chunks by itself.

The next major victory for AI came when ‘Deep Blue’ a supercomputer designed by IBM defeated the world champion chess player at that time (Gary Kasparov) in a match. This essentially was the first step for computer scientists in proving that machines could be developed to do some cognitive tasks much

better than the human brain was able to. Today, we have speech recognition, robotic process automation (RPA), a dancing robot, smart homes, with much more to come.

Goals of AI according to Researchers.

  • Logical reasoning:

Computers can be programmed to do sophisticated tasks through AI programming.

  • Knowledge representation:

Machines can be made to do tasks and respond to circumstances with an almost human-like quality through a reflective programming language based on “human-computer symbiosis.”

  • Planning and Navigation:

Such as in self-driving cars, where they follow instructions to go from one location to another in the best route following safety measures.

  • Natural Language Processing:

Computers that can comprehend, and interact with people in human language.

  • Emergent Intelligence:

The vision for this goal is to have machines exhibit emotional intelligence and moral reasoning.

Common commercial uses of AI in businesses today:

Fraud detection in banking:

Through extensive data consisting of fraudulent and non-fraudulent transactions, the computer predicts if the new transaction is extensive data consisting of fraudulent and non-fraudulent transactions.

Online Customer Support

More and more businesses are using AI to respond to customer queries online through online customer support and voice messaging systems.

Cyber Security

Computer programs are being used to detect, adapt and respond to security threats online.

Virtual Assistants:

They collect information, interpret what is being asked, and supply the answer via fetched data. Some good examples of virtual assistants are Siri, Cortana, and Alexa.

Artificial Intelligence in the future

  1. Considering the growing adoption and popularity of AI, we can imagine how things would change for humans in the future.
  2. Automated transportation will become more common and affordable.
  3. Robots could be programmed to do day to day tasks such as bring a cup of coffee, prepare reports, control home appliances, etc.
  4. Smart homes and cities will be more common and affordable
  5. Home robots will help older people with their day-to-day work. Japan, for instance, already has an in-depth program where they’ve begun to integrate robots to help. Tasks like contacting a doctor in case of emergency can now be done with AI.
  6. Hazardous jobs such as bomb defusing will be taken over by robots.

In conclusion:

The race to bring out the best and most profitable in terms of AI has already begun and now is as good a time as any to invest in it. The current dynamics prove that people are becoming more and more comfortable with interacting with machines especially since Virtual Assistants like Siri and Alexa took households around the world by storm. It is also important to note that it is highly unlikely that machines will completely take over the need for humans in workplaces. If anything it will only promote the need for people to more highly skilled labour resulting in better pay grades.

Top 5 New Technology to look out for

Technology in the world today is ever evolving and is much closer and accessible to the common man than it was ever before. From POS systems in the store around the corner to robotics in customer service the world has seen it all. According to experts, this rapid change in technology will undoubtedly set it on an exponential growth rate in the years to come.

At present most (not all) innovation in technology revolves around contactless services due to the outbreak of COVID-19 making IT professionals realize that their role will not stay the same in the contactless world tomorrow. And an IT professional in the current days will constantly be learning, unlearning, and relearning (out of necessity if not desire).

What does this mean for you as an entrepreneur?

The thing about new technology is that it sets the standards for what’s next whether its processes, prices and even service. And more often than not consumers benchmark all businesses they interact with through the experiences they had with the other businesses especially when it comes to customer service and product quality. So as an entrepreneur it is important to be aware of the new processes and technology that is out in the market that you could use to create a competitive advantage for your business’s product or service.

The top 5 technology to watch out for

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently one of the hottest buzzwords in the tech world and with good reason. Experts look at artificial intelligence as a factor of production, which has the potential to introduce new sources of growth and change the way work is done across industries.

According to, “How AI Boosts Industry Profits and Innovations”, a report by Accenture.com, AI is predicted to increase economic growth by an average of 1.7 percent across 16 industries by 2035. The report goes on to say that, by 2035, AI technologies could increase labor productivity by 40 percent or more, thereby doubling economic growth in 12 developed nations including the US.

  1. Robotic Process Automation (RPA)

Like AI and Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation, or RPA, is another technology that is automating jobs. Robotic Process Automation is the use of software with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities to handle high-volume, repeatable tasks that previously required humans to perform. Some of these tasks include:

  • Addressing queries
  • Making calculations
  • Maintaining records
  • Making transactions

RPA can help assess, prepare, and create new employee data, initiate mailing of offer letters, and streamline information across the systems.

Prior to robotic process automation, it would take a few hours to complete the onboarding formalities. Post RPA, however, the entire process could be done in a matter of a few minutes. This results in the following:

  • Automation can improve processes by to 100 percent
  • Processing becomes 10 times faster
  • Accuracy increases to 100 percent

  1. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

The next exceptional technology trend is Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). VR immerses the user in an environment while AR enhances their environment. Although this technology trend has primarily been used for gaming thus far, it has also been used for training. This technology has proven to be so effective that a simulation software using AR and VR is also used to train U.S. Navy, Army and Coast Guard ship captains.

Fun fact: 14 million AR and VR devices were sold in 2019. The global AR and VR market is expected to grow to $209.2 billion by 2022, only creating more opportunities in the trending technology, and welcoming more professionals ready for this game-changing field.

  1. Blockchain

Although most people think of blockchain technology in relation to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain offers security that is useful in many other ways. In the simplest of terms, blockchain can be described as data you can only add to, not take away from or change. Hence the term “chain” because you’re making a chain of data. Not being able to change the previous blocks is what makes it so secure. In addition, blockchains are consensus-driven, so no one entity can take control of the data. With blockchain, you don’t need a trusted third-party to oversee or validate transactions.

Several industries are involving and implementing blockchain, for the following reasons:

It is highly secure

It uses a digital signature feature to conduct fraud-free transactions making it impossible to corrupt or change the data of an individual by the other users without a specific digital signature.

It has a decentralized system

Conventionally, you need the approval of regulatory authorities like a government or bank for transactions; however, with Blockchain, transactions are done with the mutual consensus of users resulting in smoother, safer, and faster transactions.

It has automation capability

It is programmable and can generate systematic actions, events, and payments automatically when the criteria of the trigger are met.

Cyber Security

Cyber security might not seem like trending technology, given that it has been around for a while, but it is evolving just as other technologies are. That’s in part because threats are constantly new. The malevolent hackers who are trying to illegally access data are not going to give up any time soon, and they will continue to find ways to get through even the toughest security measures. It’s also in part because new technology is being adapted to enhance security. As long as we have hackers, cybersecurity will remain a trending technology because it needs to constantly evolve to defend against those hackers.

Today’s cyber security industry is primarily focused on protecting devices and systems from attackers. While the bits and bytes behind these efforts can be hard to visualize, it’s much easier to consider the effects. Without cyber security, many websites would be nearly impossible to enjoy due to ever-present denial-of-service attack attempts.

In Conclusion:

Although technologies are emerging and evolving around us all the time, these top 5 new technology trends offer are the ones to look out for now, and for the foreseeable future. Keeping up with technology that could elevate your businesses is as important as keeping up with your competitors’ activities especially if it could improve your business and quality of service.

Apple’s rumored mixed-reality headset might get an in-person event this year

Apple is purportedly wasting zero time jumping back into in-person gatherings.

According to Bloomberg, the company is planning to announce its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset within “the next several months” at an event that will presumably be open to select media and industry partners.

The news comes only a day after Apple confirmed its Worldwide Developer Conference would be held virtually this summer for the second year in a row. But while the tech giant is clearly content with unveiling its updated operating systems via livestream, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stresses that the same approach won’t fly for its headset.

“Sometime in the next several months, the company is poised to announce a mixed reality headset, its first major new device since 2015. If possible, Apple won’t want to make such a critical announcement at an online event. It wants employees, the media, its partners and developers in the room.” Considering the best (and really only) way to experience mixed-reality is by physically donning a headset, demoing this new Apple device during a livestream just wouldn’t do it justice. So it makes sense that Apple would want to go all in for this one — even with the ongoing pandemic. What can we expect from this headset? Rumors point to dual-curved 8K displays with swappable visors and over a dozen external cameras to track hand movements. It’s also said to include technology that allows for both augmented and virtual reality experiences (hence the “mixed reality” label).

According to MacRumors, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims it’s also going to be portable, meaning users won’t have to contend with messy wires. With its own onboard computing power and storage, the experience would be similar to Facebook’s standalone Oculus Quest 2 — no tethering to a PC or laptop required. But don’t get too excited about acquiring one of Apple’s MX headsets anytime soon. Kuo predicts it won’t be available until 2022. It’s highly possible that Apple’s rumored in-person event might just be held to show off its MX prototype. Still, knowing people from all over the world could be visiting Apple Park to check this thing out

Being a small or mid-sized enterprise could be definitely more rewarding than an office job for some, especially those looking for adventure in day to day life. However, as of now these adventures have turned into misadventures for most companies due to the corona virus and the sudden need to deliver just about anything from fresh flowers and groceries to some of the latest techs.

Below are some of the horror stories that entrepreneurs wake up to on some if not most mornings.

  • Multiple calls, texts and mails from the same anxious customer who just bought the last $15 gift card.
  • You just can’t seem to make the connection between your newest promo and resulting sales.
  • Products delivered to the wrong address.
  • No way to communicate to the customer who just NEEDED the product that day.
  • Miscommunicated dates and/or contact details now your delivery personnel is sitting outside an address wondering what to do with the package.
  • Confusion between employees about who is to deliver what (especially with the mounting orders thanks to the approaching holiday season)
  • And after all that you just can’t seem to figure out what would get your customers to give you that five star rating that you know you deserve
